About the book

The hundred-year history of the Utrecht Historical Students’ Association (UHSK) demonstrates how vital student associations are in fostering connections between students, lecturers, the university, and the city of Utrecht. This book presents a vivid portrait of many generations of history students as they found their way within the city of Utrecht, the university, and the student association. For some students, the
association functioned as a trade union for the aspiring left-wing historian; for another, it was a social club that organised drinks and provided discounted textbooks; for some, a “home away from home”; for many, the place where lifelong friendships were forged.

In-depth essays, personal interviews, and columns reflect on a century of academic education, student life, and changing student populations. There is one constant: within the UHSK, students find one another, share experiences, and study history together. In short, history as a unifying factor.

The editorial board of De Utrechtse Historische Studentenkring. 1926–2026. A Century United by History consisted of staff members of the Department of History and Art History at Utrecht University: Mette Bruinsma, Elise van Nederveen Meerkerk, and Jorrit Steehouder, together with two editorial assistants from the UHSK, Jasmijn Cox and Chiara Evans. In addition, three interns contributed to the data collection for the book: Lieke Loman, Aigui Thewissen, and Zita Zwart.
