Historisch Tijdschrift Aanzet is the magazine by and for Utrecht’s history students. The Aanzet is published three times a year. Aanzet offers students the opportunity to publish their own research in the form of a popular scientific article.

Aanzet was founded in 1982 and has been released continuously since then, with a short interruption in the late 1990s. The magazine is published by the Utrechtse Historische Studentenkring (UHSK). The editorial board consists of History students from Utrecht University, from the first year up to the research master's. The editorial team not only supervises the student authors but also provides fun rubrics, is responsible for the design of the magazine and maintains the website and social media. For example, the online exclusive section ‘Uit het archief van…' will be on the website and Instagram to breathe some life into it.

Each issue contains four articles written by students. The articles are based on exceptionally good papers or theses, which are converted into a popular scientific article by the student together with the editors. In addition, there are several sections. In 'The passion of…' a teacher or employee of the History department is interviewed about his or her historical passions. Our new ‘Onder de historische loep’ section looks at how history is used in different media.

The 'Inzet' is a column in which students can share and defend a historical opinion. In 'Hoe geschiedenis jij?' professionals with a background in history are interviewed. The editors also provide reviews from various historical media.

The Aanzet is always looking for papers. Have you written a thesis or essay with an original topic, a new view on things or an interesting theory that you are proud of?
