Holocaust Memorial Day 2022

Dear UHSK members,

On January the 24th, the Holocaust Memorial Day Committee organizes the Holocaust Memorial Day on behalf of the Utrechtse Historische Studentenkring and the University Utrecht. It promises to be a beautiful and interesting day in the theme ‘Holocaust Remembrance in Contemporary Times’. Four speakers will give a small lecture about this topic, about which you can read more in the program.
Unfortunately, the day will be held entirely online. The event will start at 9 and end around 12:30.
We hope to see you there!

In the 21st century, Holocaust commemoration has taken on a new form, influenced by the process of digitization and the widespread use of social media. Alongside this new way of commemorating, Europe has seen an increase in far-right politics, anti-Semitism and vandalism of monuments.  The digitization and modernization of Holocaust Remembrance, coupled with contemporary threats, will therefore be the theme of this Holocaust Memorial Day.

Academics Inger Schaap, Eva van Leeuwen, Karel Berkhoff and Imogen Dalziel will present their perspectives on different themes, while our president, Laurien Vastenhout, will moderate the discussions. All discussions will be in English.

We know that Covid-19 may be problematic for this year's Memorial Day. Therefore, we will provide online alternatives for those who prefer to stay home. In view of an extended lockdown, in all likelihood the event will have to take place online.
