This year marks 81 years since the liberation of Auschwitz. We of the Holocaust Memorial Day are privileged with continuing the tradition of Utrecht University of organising the Holocaust Memorial Day, where we honour the victims of the Holocaust and hear their stories of both pain and resilience, hoping to 'Never Forget'. Each passing year, however, survivors of the Holocaust dwindle in numbers, meaning that we now must rely on their families to pass on their stories. That is why this year's theme is 'The Impact of the Holocaust throughout Generations', because the Holocaust does not live on through first hand survivor testimonies alone. Our theme focuses on the generational impact of the Holocaust and the different ways in which the Holocaust has captured meaning for different people. This continuous process of giving meaning to the past is not only done to remember the victims, but also for us, the people that stay behind with the task of making this world a better place.
This year we have brought together four speakers who will share their knowledge and insights of how the Holocaust and other genocides still affects families after it was over. Their lectures will be instrumental in helping us expand on our theme by covering multiple disciplines, fostering an environment based on education and empathy. Our speakers are:
Channa Zaccai, Phd candidate and professor of Jewish History at the UvA. She will share and elaborate on the findings of the project "Joodse families: Oorlog en Vrijheid in drie generaties", which she headed in collaboration with the Nationaal Comité 4 en 5 Mei;
Dr. Esther Captain, endowed professor of Intergenerational Impact of Colonialism and Slavery at the UU, will focus on 'Repairing the Generational Gap', by expanding on concepts such as Postmemory and Multidirectional Memory in order to explain how different generations can be affected by one traumatic event, and how to help resolve it;
Patricia Dashorst, psychiatrist at the ARQ Centrum'45 specialised in treating Holocaust victims and their offspring who have been traumatised in one way or another by the happenings of the Holocaust and Second World War at large, will enlighten us about her profession and experiences helping people impacted by the Holocaust;
Konstantina Karagkouni, Associate researcher for the Beyond Compliance Consortium based at the UU, will discuss the intergenerational impact of sanctions which have been described as genocidal.
The lectures will be preceded and followed by short talks from our chairperson of proceedings, namely Dr. Geraldien von Frijtag Drabbe Kunzel, Associate Professor of the department of Political History and former research fellow of the International Institute for Holocaust Research Yad Vashem. She will also lead the question panels and plenary discussion regarding the lectures.
The doors will open at 09:10 and the event will start at 09:30. Lunch will be provided (see programme below).
If you want to learn about the intergenerational impact of the Holocaust and other genocides, contribute to the discourse on the subjects that will be explored, and be a part of something of increasing societal importance, please sign up and attend the Holocaust memorial day on Monday January 26, 2026. We hope to see you there.
Kind regards,
