On November 1st, 2005, Kofi Annan, then Secretary-General of the United Nations, proclaimed the liberation date of Auschwitz, January 27th, as a day of remembrance: the Holocaust Memorial Day.
In cooperation with the Utrecht University, the UHSK organizes an annual Holocaust Memorial Day on which various speakers give a lecture on a theme concerning genocides.
This year’s theme is: Different Aspects of Commemoration hosted by moderator by Dr. Richard Calis
The lectures:
Dr. Petra van den Boomgaard, associate professor with a specialization in Dutch Holocaust history. The title of her contribution is the following ‘Commemorating the Holocaust: What do we commemorate 80 years after the liberation of Auschwitz and the end of WWII? What changed, and what is not included in today’s commemoration of the Holocaust?’
Dr. Iva Vukušić, assistant professor in international history with a specialization in genocide and transnational justice. The title of her contribution is the following: ‘Justice for Atrocity Crimes: the role of Courts in The Hague’, Ever since Nuremberg in 1945 and 1946, there have been numerous efforts to hold accountable those suspected of committing genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes. In the 1990s, international tribunals to prosecute crimes in the former Yugoslavia and, then, also Rwanda, were established. Many of those efforts to provide justice for survivors, and punish perpetrators, take place in The Hague, at the International Court of Justice (ICJ), and at the International Criminal Court (ICC). In this brief lecture, we shall outline what these two international courts do, and how they can support accountability and justice in places like Ukraine, Israel and Palestine, Sudan and Syria (among others).
Jelle Veerman MA, Curator of Public Programming at the National Holocaust Museum and alumnus history student at Utrecht University, who will contribute on the creation of the new museum and the choices made in shaping social commemoration of the Holocaust.
